You’re invited to The Young Lions Jazz Conservatory Open House. We welcome you to get a rare sneak peek into a Young Lions Jazz Conservatory class. Classes are held in the Arts District of Liberty Station, 2650 Truxtun Road, Rooms 203 and 205, San Diego, CA 92106. Select a class (or more) from the schedule below. The instructor will give a brief talk at the beginning of class and then you are welcome to stay and watch the rehearsal for as long as you like. Class are an hour and a half. Please be advised that there is no food or drink allowed in the classrooms.

Gilbert Castellanos Presents: The Young Lions Series Featuring Serena Geroe

On NOV 22, the spotlight is on Serena Geroe. Serena Geroe, 16, has been playing guitar since she was 8. Serena was selected as the 2016 Cal Poly All-State Festival Jazz Band guitarist and was the 2015 California All State Junior High Jazz Band guitarist. A student at the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory and the Canyon Crest Academy Jazz Band, her honors include Outstanding Soloist, California Association for Music Education Southern Border Section Jazz Festival in 2016 and 2015. Serena is also a percussionist, and a current member of the Samba Drum Line at Canyon Crest Academy.

Young Lions Students Perform in the Lobby Before Jazz @ The Jacobs

As well as serving as Young Lions Jazz Conservatory Artistic Director, Gilbert Castellanos also curates the Jazz @ The Jacobs series at Symphony Hall. He kicks off the third season of this successful series with “The First Lady of Song: An Ella Fitzgerald Tribute.” This concert will feature 3 top-notch vocalists and Gilbert himself on trumpet. But before the concert on the main stage, a group of Young Lions Jazz Conservatory students will be entertaining the crowd in the lobby from 7 to 8pm, and will feature 3 of OUR vocalists – Zion Dyson, Julia Picker and Veena Dorazio. Gilbert Castellanos Presents: The Young Lions Series Featuring Dharma Dorazio

On November 29, the spotlight is on 15-year old upright bass player Dharma D’Orazio. A sophomore at Sage Creek High School Orchestra, she also attends the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory , an after school jazz program founded by Gilbert Castellanos. She has also participated in UCSD Jazz Camp.

For the second year in a row 16-year-old vocalist Zion Dyson will be performing her Holiday Jazz concert as part of The Young Lions Series. Zion is a junior at The Bishop’s School. Come out and be merry with Zion and her band: Carmen Murray on drums, John Murray on bass, Jason Picker on keys and Julian Roel on Sax.  6pm – 8pm.  Stay for the jam that starts at 8:30pm.
